Associate Professor of Biomedical Sciences

Bio

Associate Professor of Biomedical Sciences

Dr. Elizabeth Eckman is the Director of Preclinical Research at MANA. She earned her PhD in Molecular Biology and Microbiology from Case Western Reserve University, where her research focused on novel methods for delivering therapeutic genes and proteins to the mucosal epithelial tissues affected by Cystic Fibrosis. She expanded her training into Neuroscience, conducting postdoctoral research at the Mayo Clinic in Florida. Dr. Eckman was appointed Assistant Professor of Neuroscience at the Mayo Clinic College of Medicine in 2003, and developed a research program focused primarily on Alzheimer’s Disease (AD). Her laboratory continues to research the role of Abeta degradation in AD, as well as the potential of cholinergic agonists to stimulate adult neurogenesis in the regions of the brain most affected by the disease.

Dr. Eckman is enthusiastic about being on the BRInj research team, where she can apply her skills to projects in other areas, as well.  She is participating in a study to uncover biomarkers of neonatal brain injury using biobank-stored neonatal samples, and collaborates on a project to more clearly understand the neurological components associated with Lyme disease.  Dr. Eckman also assists with projects related to neonatal brain ischemia, intraventricular hemorrhage and necrotizing enterocolitis.
